Here are some of the topics we talked about in the optional Elluminate session on Thursday, June 19, 2008. David Croft: Access to Assisstive Technology Malia Mallchok: Access to Open Document Format at College of Educatioln Liu Liu: International Internet Access or Trafficking Iris Takushi: Access to Career Technology & Career ePortfolios Malia Mallchok: Social Justice for the Elderly. WHAT IS YOUR PASSION? Lilinoe
As Lilinoe mentioned in her comment, I'm looking at doing my poster on the COE's recent decision to adopt Open Document Format (the format OpenOffice uses)as a standard. This policy change means that students are not restricted to using only Microsoft Office for assignments, but they can use OpenOffice (free!) instead. I think by embracing Open Document Format (ODF) the COE is freeing students from the necessity to pay an exorbitant cost for proprietary software, an expense that some cannot afford.
I'm thinking of basing my project on issues related to children with special needs. Many of the patients who come through the MCH LEND Program tend to seek assistance in areas such as educational settings because schools are usually not equipped with appropriate technologies to allow for special needs students to have similar learning experiences as the other children in the school. I will have to look more into this by going through the resources that are at the program's office as well as online. (Tiffany A.)
I will be making my digital poster with Keynote but will offer PP and PDF formats. This will be a draft for an eventual Web based course on visual literacy. Although I will be using a slide based presentation format I will build the poster showing adjacent images. The design of the poster will also reveal the value of visual literacy. The poster will address various social issues surrounding visual literacy including equity and honesty, propaganda and the use of icons and symbols.
Well, I'm still in limbo as to what my final project will be. I've had trouble even understanding what is entailed in this project. I'm a visual person and need to see what I'm to do. When I used the links provided on the assignment sheet, and saw these large presentations of poster sessions done with images, text, and graphs, I was sort of taken back. If any of you wish to enlighten me and take some stress off of me I'd appreciate it. My email name is wsulliva. Reading all of your posts makes me feel I'm way out there in left-left field with this.
Great ideas everyone. I think the main point is to understand that the confluence of social justice and technology is not only meaningful, but critical in our society.
Anything that showcases how technology can address the tough issues with which we all grapple will bring us one step closer to justice.

Here's a link that might be useful to David. Open Source Assistive Technology Software. http://www.oatsoft.org/Software/browse/Repository/Need
Really nice collection of software.

Thank you Margret for the link regarding assistive technology.
Regarding blogs, generally speaking I am not a blogger. I prefer synchronous communication to asynchronous.
Nancy, your final project on Visual Literacy sounds quite interesting and pertinent, considering the barrage of visual information in society today.
